That gap is the biggest driver of 5kW battery cost in Ireland, and it comes down to VAT treatment and inverter work rather than the battery itself. One more detail matters before you compare quotes. SEAI’s grant only applies to batteries of 5 kWh or larger, so a 5kW battery sits exactly on the qualifying line.

Expect €1,500 to €3,000 for a 5 kWh battery added during a solar PV installation, and €3,000 to €5,500 to retrofit one to an existing system. Both figures cover supply and installation. The €600 grant comes off whichever route applies, so the net figure is what you should be comparing.

How the €600 SEAI Battery Grant Applies to a 5 kWh Battery
SEAI pays a flat €600 for any home battery of 5 kWh or larger, whatever it costs. The Battery Energy Storage System grant opened on 6 October 2026 and does not scale with capacity, so a 5 kWh unit and a 15 kWh stack draw the same amount. Batteries under 5 kWh are not eligible at all.
It can be claimed alongside the solar PV grant or entirely on its own. With the PV grant capped at €1,800, the maximum combined value of both is €1,800 on one application.
To qualify:
- The home was built and occupied before 2025
- The property has a valid MPRN, with no battery grant previously paid against it
- The battery is 5 kWh or larger
- An SEAI-registered Solar PV contractor does the work, with electrical work by a Safe Electric registered electrician
- A post-works BER assessment is published once the job is complete

What Affects the Price of a 5kW Battery
Four things move the number on a quote, and a cheaper headline figure usually hides one of them.
- Usable versus nominal capacity. A battery sold as 5 kWh does not always deliver 5 kWh, so check the spec sheet rather than the product name.
- Inverter compatibility. Not every battery pairs with every inverter. If yours is incompatible, a replacement is in the quote, and this is the most common reason two retrofit prices differ by hundreds.
- Warranty and cycle life. Most units carry ten years, but cycle limits and the retained capacity guaranteed at the end of the term vary between manufacturers.
- Installation complexity. Cable runs, wall space, ventilation and whether the board needs upgrading all add labour time.
Is a 5kW Battery the Right Size for Your Home?
A 5 kWh battery covers a typical evening load, which is what storage is for. Lights, cooking, washing and standby draw run through the hours your panels have stopped producing, and that is the block of usage a 5 kWh unit absorbs.
Where it runs short is heavy overnight demand. Charging an EV or running a heat pump through a cold night empties 5 kWh quickly, and those homes usually size up to 10 kWh or more.
Because the €600 is flat above 5 kWh, it stops influencing the decision once you clear the threshold. Size the battery to your evening consumption and your roof output, not to the grant.
